Another nail in the coffin of Catholicism

Why the Pope opposes condoms

The article above is about why the Pope came out and disagreed with the use of Condoms too stop the spread of Aids.It doesn’t really tell me why he opposes it except something about Thou Shall not Kill and Family values.I was raised Catholic and attended a Catholic primary school and non denominational high school.I made my confirmation and communion and  growing up it was an important part of life.I have now more or less cut off my links to the Catholic church not because I felt strongly against it but really through laziness and always finding something better to do than go to church.I have never really spoke out against Catholicism probably because I felt that we were a minority in Scotland and enough people spoke out about us anyway.

Recently though the more out of touch the catholic church becomes the more it pisses me off.I realise now that I am an atheist and I feel quite strongly against many aspects of organised religion, especially right wing fundamentalism which is prevalent here in America and which the Catholic Church appears now to be leaning towards more. There was a bishop who came out and said that if you voted for Obama you could not take communion as it was a vote for abortion.Nutcase!

I do believe there have been many decent people in the Catholic Church, there have been good priests also, for example Oscar Romero who stood up against the Right Wing dictatorships of Central America and the American backed paramilitaries in the early eighties.John Paul II came out and criticized these priests for their actions, which is another reason I find myself against the Catholic Church.Oscar Romero was murdered by agents of the El Salvadorean government in 1980.

Many priests were sent to concentration camps in occupied Europe for their criticism of the Nazis.I have great respect for these men but I find myself now having little respect for the catholic church especially when it comes out with mumbo jumbo on why Africans should not use condoms.

Condoms are the devils work.

Condoms are the devils work.

‘When I give to the poor they call me a saint.
When I ask why they are poor they call me a communist.’

    Good ol Oscar.
A true saint in a world of dangerous nutters.

    Good stuff Comrade Stevie.

  3. Timothy Says:

The BBC reporter seems either to not have heard or read what the Pope actully said, but seems to be reacting to what others have reported. The Pope actually said:

“I would say the opposite. I think that the reality that is most effective, the most present and the strongest in the fight against AIDS, is precisely that of the Catholic Church, with its programs and its diversity. I think of the Sant’Egidio Community, which does so much visibly and invisibly in the fight against AIDS … and of all the sisters at the service of the sick.

“I would say that one cannot overcome this problem of AIDS only with money — which is important, but if there is no soul, no people who know how to use it, (money) doesn’t help.

“One cannot overcome the problem with the distribution of condoms. On the contrary, they increase the problem.

“The solution can only be a double one: first, a humanization of sexuality, that is, a spiritual human renewal that brings with it a new way of behaving with one another; second, a true friendship even and especially with those who suffer, and a willingness to make personal sacrifices and to be with the suffering. And these are factors that help and that result in real and visible progress.

“Therefore I would say this is our double strength — to renew the human being from the inside, to give him spiritual human strength for proper behavior regarding one’s own body and toward the other person, and the capacity to suffer with the suffering. … I think this is the proper response and the church is doing this, and so it offers a great and important contribution. I thank all those who are doing this.”

In light of what the Pope actually said, the BBC article seems “strawman.”

    God bless… +Timothy

Most religions have always been fundamentalist throughout history. Its just a way of oppressing people into thinking lifes not too bad, even though they are being exploited and they are poor. Lifes pretty hard and shitty now, but don`t worry once you die things will be great and you will go to heaven (but only if you are content with your lot, and do what we tell you when you are alive, or else you go to hell). Organised religion is simply a mechanism for the state to control the population. Anyone who buys into it is a numpty.
Thats not to say I dont believe in God, or some creative force in the universe. If you think of our situation in relation to the millions of universe`s out there, and the ever expanding galaxy, fuck knows whats going on out in space, the universe, the galaxy; and what our place really is within it! To say God (or some creative force) does not exist is stupid! You don`t know what is behind life and neither does anyone else. Its a mystery!
The whole anti Darwinism, condom, abortion, homosexual, contraception in general, freedom of thought, sex before marraige….etc issues are just extensions of what organised religion has always been banging on about. Different ways to control your body and your mind. Can`t remember who wrote this but this quote is interesting
“As far as society as a whole is concerned, if you create a population of individuals suffering from various guilt complexes, make sure they feel bad about themselves so they will be humble, and get them to make most of life`s decisions on an emotional poorly thought-out basis rather than a rational one, you will create a dysfunctional society”
Telling Aids ridden Africans not to wear condoms as its against their religion is completely idiotic though. That goes beyond control and becomes a form of persecution against the African people, due to the amount of suffering they will have to endure.

I still disagree with what the pope said,in fact Timothy the statement from the Pope you posted is proof that the reporter and everyone else heard what the Pope said.

“One cannot overcome the problem with the distribution of Condoms On the contrary, they increase the problem”

So the Pope believes that a proven method in reducing HIV infection makes the problem worse.Eh? I think not Timothy.
Ask the Male Homosexual population if the use of condoms have saved countless lives.
The Pope like many other Christian extremists are getting in the way of Science,Logic and the betterment of mankind and should realise that their doctrine is damaging and outdated.
Where as abstinence is obviously a fail safe way of not getting HIV transmission via sexual intercourse it does kinda go against human nature, well maybe not if you are the Pope haha.
Now,I have cared for many Aids patients,I have always treated them with respect and dignity I think there should be state of the art facilities, anti viral drugs and committed caring people to look after people stricken with HIV/Aids,but this will not stop HIV,only research into a cure and safe sex methods i.e. the use of condoms will stop or curtail it.
I really feel the Pope gave nothing with his statement except be less promiscuous, don’t use Condoms and if you get Aids hopefully someone nice will look after you preferably a nun.
Sorry Timothy but really The Pope should keep out of matters of science he just makes himself and Catholicism look foolish and outdated.
    Thanks for commenting Peter..

Mark,I will always have an open mind as to lives mysteries.I find it is religious extremists who are the people who would rather us all think in black and white.
I can’t believe in this day and age people still allow themselves to be guided by things that have no scientific proof and even kill people over it.
    They are all delusional!!!

  7. Mark Says:

Drawn mare to the eastern religions, Buddhism in particular which is particularly anti-materialistic and fits in nicely wae ma politics. Me thinks the fundamentalists are in need of a bit of enlightenment! As far as I know (which is not a lot) the Dalai Lama doesnae mind the smell oh burnin rubber! He gets ma vote anyday.

  8. bingabinga Says:

I am just putting my energies into making sure The religious right are shown up as deranged fools as much as I can, which fits into my way of thinking.
Mark I am reading that book,my granny made me an Anarchist it’s great.

  9. twoforapound Says:

In my opinions, organised religion is so out of date. What might have been relevant hundreds of years ago is a million miles fae the lives we have the noo.

And that Pope’s an auld bastard. I have my own reasons for hating him but the big argument aboot condoms is ridiculous.

We get the message, the Catholic church don’t beleive in using contraception, they think that abstinence and staying in monogamous relationships is the way forward.

But who said that condoms are just for preventing babies?

That’s like saying cheese is just for sandwiches.

Africa’s never gonna get rid of the AIDS problem withoot education and prevention.

If someones shagging out of wedlock, using contraception, cheating and sleeping around, they’re sinning anyway so using a durex isnae gonna put them off.

It just annoys me that the Pope sits there and says this is wrong, thats wrong… putting fear intae folk who are Catholics and find themselves the subject of the Pope’s rants.

I’m sitting reading this thing aboot Catholics opposing gay/les marriage.

    Words fail me.

  10. bingabinga Says:

TFP you should read this book,

    http://www.amazon.com/American-Fascists-Christian-Right-America/dp/0743284437

These people are not christian they are Facists masquerading as Christians.I know in Europe relighous groups are not really a big deal, here in the states they can win and lose elections they are very powerful and somewhat Evil.
The anti gay lobby among them is very large and vocal. What ever happened to the teachings of acceptance and love within christianity.
