Tent City

I was driving the Inlaws around the neighbourhood  on Saturday showing them the sights getting some lunch just doing the normal. We drove by a local church when I spotted lots of tents and stall like places.I automatically thought that it was a church fete and thought we could all go and get some homebaking or a look around the bric a brac stall or whatever else you do at a church fete.As I drove by the entrance I noticed a group of rather unkempt homeless looking characters which I thought was strange.I suddenly realised that this was Tent City in my wee neighbourhood.

Tent City is a homeless encampment which moves around the city, camping on church grounds for a month or two at a time.I have seen it before and have looked after patients who have given their address as tent city.It has a bit of a bad reputation with many communities annoyed that they have a large encampment of homeless in their backyard. The usual cry’s of junkie’s criminal’s and paedo’s go up and at times I do have sympathy with the communities.Who really wants a Mad Max looking shantytown next door too their American Pie white Picket fence surbuban house and that is the type of neighbourhood we live in.In fact my initial thought was Fuck sake I have to deal with this in work now they are on my doorstep because of some do gooding Christians .Even though I think myself as a fair minded liberal type I still had the initial instinct to fear them.

So at that moment I decided to take the risk and do some investigating for myself and my community. The next day after I played some golf I took a walk up to Tent City and entered into the belly of the beast.

Here is what I found.

That was the pictures I managed to smuggle out of Tent City I hope you appreciate the lengths I go to so that my faithful readers well all 10 of them are kept up to date with life in the hood.

Actually the truth is I went up to the gate and a nice young guy Donald showed me around. It was clean and the people were friendly enough I talked to an African American women who said she had lived there for 6 months and a woman who said she was half Native American and Scottish who was also very nice, she had a Scottish flag on her tent.

I felt sorry for people who have to live there in all weather,in fact it snowed here last night. There were no signs of drugs or even alcohol everyone seemed pretty mellow in fact nothing much was happening except people were lining up for food and someone was getting a haircut.I asked if they needed any donations, they needed clothes and food so I went and bought them groceries and promised I would come back with my old clothes.

So there you have it.I am glad I went up to Tent City and found out for myself what was going down in the neighbourhood  .When any of my Republican neighbours start talking about the Tent City homeless I can say they are all really quite nice and that we should all do our bit to help the more unfortunate in our society, not leave it to the churches.

Anyway with the collapse of the Capitalist economy we might all be wanting a place in Tent City some day.

    Excellent stuff, Peter.

And you’re right, Tent City is the showroom of the future (for the lucky ones, anyway).

I think that old photo from the 30`s is the future. A senior government minister was caught on tape the other day saying this economic crisis is going to be worse than than the Great Depression, and he was an adviser to Gordon Brown when Brown was chancellor. Also, a few of the banks that have been bailed out by the government over here are giving massive payouts to staff, RBS are giving out £1 billion in bonuses. Thats after taxpayer`s money has saved them from going under; and the government holds a 70% share in the bank! Obama has had the sense to stop the bonus schemes in American banking.
In the present climate all these wankers can think about is lining their own pockets, as thats all the`ve been doing for decades. The world is run by greed, with profit being the only goal. Its time for a complete political regime change, me thinks. Capitalism is dead, RIP.
    Beginning to sound like Tommy!

I agree Mark I think people are still cushioned from the affects of the recession but as more job’s are lost and Morgatge payments fall behind,Tent City maybe some peoples reality.I hope not but I think Britain may well be in a worst position than most.At least we have a new government here willing to change.Something which I also found interesting is that Britain has the highest Credit card debt per individual in the world,That is bad and it proves consumerism is more rife in the UK than even the USA.
Hopefully this is the end of unrestrained capitalism and the following of rogue economists like Milton Friedman.
We need a good dose of Socialism.

  4. Mark Says:

Gordon Brown is an idiot. He`s trying to cure the debt problem by getting Britain into more debt. Giving irresponsible bankers billions of pounds to get the coggs of a bankrupt economy moving again. As if the situation of massive personal debt and overinflated houseprices was worth re-inflating! There is absolutely no point in saving money over here, as interest rates are so low; Gordon wants us to spend and the banks to start lending again so more people will get into debt, and nobody saves any money. Crazy stuff. These neo-liberal economists need shot!
You are right about consumerism being rife. Most people are only concerned about living the designer lifestyle. The wake-up call is coming though. Then the UK will be covered in T in the Parks!

Yes I heard he cut VAT so things are a penny cheaper,Instead of giving the poorest a larger tax cut.

  9. bingabinga Says:

  10. Mark Says:

I’m astonished by this. Is this a common occurence in the USA? I was speaking to an estate agent recently and she said that the market has picked up ever so slightly since the back end of last year (think she was trying to convince herself). It’s a bit scary just now, I don’t think anyone can predict how things will go. My Dad is a retired accountant and he is all doom and gloom about it. He’s decided it will be 25-30 years before we’re back to where we were a couple of years ago and that Britain will become like Albania (!!!). Nothing like a wee bit of cheery chat to lighten my day, haha.

I’m impressed with your altruism towards the tent people. If more of the world’s population had the same generosity perhaps we wouldn’t be in the poo right now.

  12. bingabinga Says:

I think there are more homeless here Fiona and it is getting worse. This is what happens when you do not have a welfare state and no provision for the mentally ill add people losing their homes and jobs to it all and that results in Tent Cities springing up everywhere. It is a shame and we are maybe a mogatge payment away from this reality.

  13. stevie Says:

The 2010 Scotland census will be brought to you courtesy of the Scottish Government by CACI. CACI are just your friendly global contractors who, among other things, supplied the torturers to Abu Graib prison.
I’m not making this up. Honest. I haven’t got the imagination for a start.
Anyway the campaign is underway to spoil the ‘dummy’ census when it hits Edinburgh and Lewis in March. And there’s a less official campaign to dangle John Swinney from the Forth Road Bridge before then.

Monster Raving Loonies? Can anyone remember a time when we weren’t ruled by monster raving loonies?
